The third weekend in August is a special weekend around Glendale, Colorado.
20 teams from all over the globe will descend upon Infinity Park for a three-day, 62-match slugfest that will see one emerge as the 2024 RugbyTown 7s Cup Champion when the tournament returns for its 12th year on Friday, August 23rd.
The level of competition increases every single year, and 2024 is shaping up to be one of the strongest tournaments yet. Teams from five countries – the United States, Trinidad & Tobago, the United Kingdom, Israel, and South Africa – will make up the field as teams attempt to become the ninth different RugbyTown 7s Cup Champion and take home the $10,000 grand prize.
Eight different teams have won the RugbyTown 7s cup in the 11 years that the tournament has been played. The USA Falcons took home the inaugural RugbyTown 7s Cup in 2012 before winning again in 2014. 2013 saw the USA All-Americans secure their first RugbyTown title before winning their second one a decade later as the USA U23s. Denver 7s Selects became the first and only team to win the cup in back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016. 2017 was the beginning of a four-year run of different champions as Fiji Savu Water earned the title a year after winning the gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. British Army earned the RugbyTown 7s title in 2018 before Ramblin’ Jesters broke through and won their two titles in 2019 and 2022 with Samurai winning the whole thing in 2021 – the only year they’ve competed in the tournament.
Pool A is one that longtime fans of the RugbyTown 7s will be familiar with as it is the U.S. Armed Forces pool and the only one that never changes year in and year out. All Marine Rugby 7s, All Navy Rugby, Department of Air Force Rugby, and U.S. Coast Guard will try to prevent All-Army from securing their 10th U.S. Armed Forces Championship title in 2024. All Marine Rugby 7s won the inaugural U.S. Armed Forces Championship in 2012, and All Navy Rugby secured their only title in 2021. Otherwise, it’s been All-Army claiming the title and the bragging rights that come with it for the year.
Pool B features RugbyTown mainstays in Gorilla Rugby out of Texas, two-time Cup Champion Ramblin’ Jesters, and the Tsunami Wavewearers who secured a fourth-place finish in 2023 with newcomer Misfits from Trinidad & Tobago making their first tournament appearance in 2024.
Like Pool B, Pool C features four familiar teams and one strong newcomer. 2016 and 2017 champs Denver 7s Selects are joined by 2022 Bowl Champions Lions 7s, NAV 7s – who head into the 2024 RugbyTown 7s after securing their third-straight USA Club 7s National Championship – looking to avenge their 2023 loss to USA U23s in the Cup Final, and the always strong SoCal Griffins who took home the Plate in 2023. Pool C is rounded out by a competitive Apache 7s side from the U.K. looking to make a splash in their first RugbyTown 7s appearance.
Pool D is home to 2022 Plate Champions Casanovas who will be making their third appearance at RugbyTown 7s in 2024. This pool also features Tel Aviv Heat, 2023 Bowl Champions Wild Dogs of South Africa, and will be where the USA U23s begin their defense of the 2023 RugbyTown 7s crown. It will also feature an exciting Assassins 7s team from the U.K. making their first appearance at the RugbyTown 7s.
In addition to three full days of great rugby, fans are encouraged to participate in the theme days throughout the 2024 tournament. Be sure to arrive at Infinity Park with a Hawaiian shirt for Tropical Day on Friday, wear your legwarmers and neon colors for 80s Day on Saturday, and your cowboy boots and hat for Western Day on Sunday. There will also be a limited number of fun giveaway items for fans who arrive early each day.
