The electric play on the pitch at Infinity Park on Day 1 was only interrupted by the electricity in the sky.
A weather delay pushed play back by an hour, but it was a welcome break on a day that featured rugby action happening at a sprinter’s pace.
When the sun set on Day 1, there were new faces sitting atop their respective pools.
Assassins 7s and NOVA Rugby handled their business in Pool A on Friday. Both sides put up a 2-0 record and defeated Heat Rugby, the 2025 Cup Champions, in the process. Assassins 7s and NOVA Rugby will duke it out for the top seed in the pool on Saturday. Despite finishing with just a -8 point differential, Heat Rugby finds themselves winless on Day 1. Wild Dogs found themselves on the wrong side of two big scorelines and will square off against a hungry Heat Rugby team on Saturday as both teams are looking for their first win of the 2026 tournament.
In Pool B, both R10 Selects and Scimitar Storm picked up where they left off in 2025 with strong performances on Day 1 of 2026. Both Scimitar Storm and R10 Selects finished Day 1 with 2-0 records after two huge victories, and they’ll see who will head into the playoffs with the top seed when they square off on Saturday. Both N.A. Lions and Apache 7s finished with 0-2 records on Day 1.
No team in Pool C escaped Day 1 of the RugbyTown 7s unscathed. Belmont Shore finished the day atop the pool with a 1-1-0 record after playing Gorilla Rugby to a 17-17 draw in their final match of the day. Gorilla Rugby is still looking for their first win of 2026, but are not out of a tightly contested pool with the points they grabbed from the draw. Both Casanovas and NAV 7s finished with a 1-1 record, setting up an interesting Saturday for the entirety of Pool C.
RugbyTown 7s regulars in Tsunami Barbarians and USA Falcons finished with 2-0 records on Day 2. In one of the wildest finishes in RugbyTown 7s history, a fortunate bounce of the ball allowed Tsunami Barbarians to narrowly escape their first match with a victory over NCR All-Americans. NCR All-Americans and Denver 7s Selects played tough on Friday, but will be looking for their first win on Saturday.
All-Army Sports and All-Coast Guard Rugby both sit atop Pool M after 2-0 starts to their 2026 campaign. Coast Guard will put their unblemished record on the line against All-Marine Rugby 7s and 11-time U.S. Armed Forces Champion All-Army Sports on Saturday. Rounding out Pool M are the Department of the Air Force Rugby 7s, who finished with a 1-1 record, while All-Marine Rugby 7s and All Navy Rugby will be searching for their wins on Saturday.
