The 2025 RugbyTown 7s will look a little different in its 13th year.
For the first time in the history of the tournament, the five branches of the United States Armed Forces will forgo the opportunity to compete for the title of RugbyTown 7s Cup Champion and the $10,000 grand prize. They will instead focus all of their efforts on taking home the coveted U.S. Armed Forces Championship.
The tweak in the tournament formatting leaves 16 teams vying for the RugbyTown 7s Cup. Instead of 20 teams, the 2025 RugbyTown 7s will feature 21 teams competing in 57 matches over the course of three days. Friday’s matches will now begin at noon and will finish around 7:40 PM.
Pool M, the U.S. Armed Forces pool, has been dominated by All-Army. In the 12 years that the tournament has been played, All-Army has won 10 U.S. Armed Forces championships. All Marine Rugby 7s secured the very first U.S. Armed Forces Championship in 2012, and All Navy Rugby won their first title in 2021. All-Coast Guard and the Department of the Air Force are the two branches of the U.S. Military that are still searching for their first title.
Denver 7s Selects, the defending RugbyTown 7s Cup champions and only team to win three titles, call Pool A home in 2025. They’ll have to go through RugbyTown 7s veterans SoCal Griffins and two first-timers in the NCR Griffins and R10 Selects for a shot to defend their title. Composed of collegiate all-stars, the NCR Griffins took the challenge of competing in their first-ever RugbyTown 7s on short notice, replacing Lions 7s just a few weeks prior to the tournament kicking off.
All four teams in Pool B have played their fair share of matches at the RugbyTown 7s over the course of the year. Casanovas will attempt to build off their strong 2024 campaign that saw them through to the cup semifinals, while NAV 7s will attempt to get over the hump and secure their first RugbyTown 7s cup title after several strong campaigns. Heat Rugby has also seen success at the tournament over the last several years, while N.A. Lions returns to the RugbyTown 7s after a several-year hiatus.
Like Pool B, Pool C is also composed of four teams that know their way around Infinity Park. Apache 7s returns for the second consecutive year and is joined by Texas’ Gorilla Rugby as the two teams in Pool C that haven’t been crowned RugbyTown 7s Cup Champion. Both of their Pool C companions – the Ramblin’ Jesters and USA Falcons – have each won two RugbyTown 7s Cup titles. The USA Falcons won the inaugural RugbyTown 7s cup in 2012 and 2014, while the Ramblin’ Jesters claimed the crown and the $10,000 grand prize in 2019 and 2022. Both teams will surely be gunning to join the Denver 7s Selects as the only teams to win three RugbyTown 7s Cup titles.
Pool D features only one RugbyTown 7s rookie in the Scimitar Storm, but they are looking to make some noise in their first trip to Infinity Park. They’ll square off against three teams that have become mainstays at the tournament in recent years in Assassins 7s, Tsunami Rugby – the 2024 RugbyTown 7s runner-ups, and Wild Dogs.
